Voicing the Future: Navigating AI in the Australian Voice-Over Industry

I’m not usually one to spruik my wares, but in recent weeks I have been involved in many conversations with artists, agents, and various other professionals about the impact of AI on the creative industries.

I’m not sure whether it’s the pressure from the tech industries ‘end users’ to on-board authentic Australian voices to their platforms or continually shrinking budgets, but the creative landscape is changing and currently, I find myself at the intersection of innovation and tradition within the voice-over industry.

With a background in talent management, licensing, casting and production, the breadth of my experience extends beyond the typical boundaries of a traditional voice casting director or audio producer. This unique skillset allows me to delicately navigate the subtleties of aligning talent with a brand when casting voices in the commercial space.

In this rapidly evolving landscape of AI voices and brand engagement, the importance of partnering with a voice casting director and audio producer who is not only adept in current practices but also future-focused, is paramount.

My approach is rooted in building strong relationships with tech start-ups and suppliers in the space, ensuring that the bridge between the latest in AI voice technology and traditional voice talent is not only crossed but reinforced with mutual respect and understanding. My efforts to connect with the wider industry aims to establish ethical guardrails and standards for the use and licensing of human voices. This dedication reflects a commitment to practices that honour the Australian Association of Voice Actors (AAVA) and National Association of Voice Actors (NAVA) core pillars of consent, control, and compensation, for both voice artists and brands alike.

In an era where digital innovation and human creativity intersect, my role becomes crucial in ensuring that the adoption of AI voices deepens rather than replaces the human element. This perspective champions a future where technology enhances an open approach to collaboration between brands and voice actors, fostering relationships that respect the artist's craft while enhancing the brand's reach and impact. Resulting in the creation of authentic and engaging audience experiences.

Whether you’re a production or a brand looking to cast and license AI voices or have an existing human voice you would like to integrate into AI, there is a meticulous process to consider.
